The story of Aarhus City Hall

The tower you see was not in the first plans for this city hall. Massive public pressure got one added, together with the idea of cladding the whole building in marble. The decision to build was taken in 1937, and the architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller saw it inaugurated on 2 June 1941. The concrete structure is covered with 6,000 square metres of grey marble from Porsgrunn in Norway.
Look at the copper details outside, recognisable by their green verdigris. The tower rises 60 metres, and its clock face measures 7 metres across. Inside, the mood is richer, with oak parquet, patterned tile floors, glass and wooden walls and large wall paintings.
The furniture, designed specially to fit the building, was the work of Hans Wegner. In March 1994 it became one of just a few Danish city halls marked for preservation, and in January 2006 it entered the Danish Culture Canon for architecture.
