The story of Kozjak Falls

Kozjak Falls

The Kozjak waterfall does not simply fall into the open: it has carved itself a dark hall. Over time the water hollowed out a chamber in the rock, its roof collapsed, and today the 15-metre Great Kozjak pours into a blue-green pool on the floor of this natural room. It is the second and best known of six waterfalls on Kozjak Creek, a left tributary of the Soča that rises high below the ridges of Krnčica and Oblo brdo.

The well-kept path starts in Kobarid at the Napoleon Bridge. Near where the Kozjak meets the Soča, beside a stone bridge from 1895, you reach the first fall, the Little Kozjak, 8 metres high, dropping into a pool 10 metres deep. Along the way you pass several caverns, remains of the First World War.

The four upper falls are hard to reach, as no path leads to them. Since June 2019 the municipality of Kobarid charges a fee for visiting the falls.
