The story of Liverpool Cathedral

Liverpool Cathedral

Everything about this cathedral is huge. It is the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain, and the longest cathedral in the world: 621 feet from end to end on the outside, including its Lady Chapel. Its tower rises 331 feet, making it one of the tallest church buildings in the world without a spire.

It was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and it was built between 1904 and 1978 – so the people who laid its first stones never saw it finished. It is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool. Liverpool has two cathedrals, and they face each other along Hope Street, which links this one to the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral about half a mile to the north.

Walk to the middle of the long nave, stand still for a moment, and let the scale of the space settle around you.
