The story of Velika Plaža

Velika Plaža

Twelve kilometres of sand: that is Velika Plaža, the Big Beach, the longest beach in Montenegro and one of the longest in Europe. It stretches from Port Milena in Ulcinj all the way to the Bojana River, which separates it from Ada Bojana. The New York Times included Velika Plaža and Montenegro's South Coast in its list of top places to go in 2010. If the wind picks up in the afternoon, you will understand why this is called the premier kiteboarding location on the Adriatic coast.

On summer afternoons strong cross-onshore winds blow, while the current is not strong enough to be a significant danger, which makes it suitable for safe learning, and a number of kitesurfing schools work along the beach. The flat water spot is at the southeast end, inside the river mouth. In summer the average temperature is 34°C and the water averages 23°C.

The beach lies in a protected natural area, surrounded by dunes and alluvial forest.
